Xtendwave Announces Portable Test Kit
2007-09-18
NEWS RELEASE
Denver – Sept. 18, 2007 – Xtendwave, a technology company dedicated to changing the economics of delivering broadband services to areas without great population density, today announced that it has a portable demonstration kit available to test Xtendwave’s technology in the field on network providers’ test networks.
“We are out meeting with network owners and operators to show them how they can send a broadband signal up to 27,000 feet from a central office,” said Mort Aaronson, chairman of Xtendwave. “In our first product release, Xtendwave extends the reach, relevance and lifespan of existing copper networks so that phone companies can deliver an affordable broadband connection to every household that currently has a dial tone.”
Third-party testing in Sept. 2006 demonstrated that Xtendwave can deliver 1.5 Mbps over standard copper lines at 22,000 feet from a central office. This allows Xtendwave to deliver over 200 Kbps at distances beyond 27,000 feet reaching more than 99 percent of the households in the United States. The key application of Xtendwave’s technology deploys chips in the transmitting and receiving device using patented signal processing technique that makes more efficient use of bandwidth.
Xtendwave’s new test kit consists of a central office rack mountable device and a customer premise modem so that telcos can replicate Xtendwave’s DSL speeds in the field. This approach does not use wire bonding or compression, and it does not require power to be altered or systems to be re-engineered. The cost for these capabilities will be integrated into line card costs.
“This is a solution for telcos to rapidly combat line loss by offering bundled broadband services to underserved last-mile households without incurring the expense of laying fiber,” said Aaronson. “We’re out to prove that copper has a bright future.”
Xtendwave recently completed its A round of financing with approximately $10 million in private equity and debt, and it put in place a new management team early this year. Prior to joining Xtendwave, Aaronson helped Denver become the first U.S. city to close the digital divide as CEO of Ricochet, an affordable wireless Internet Service Provider for consumers. He was also the first to deregulate a U.S. utility as leader of KN Energy. Marc Landry, Xtendwave CEO, has more than 18 years leadership experience in the technology and semiconductor memory sectors with companies including Texas Instruments and Go Figure Technology.
